World to World/Mundo a Mundo
World to World gives the opportunity to practice Spanish-English and English-Spanish literary translation in an encouraging, energetic atmosphere of participants from Mexico, the United States and often other countries as well. Meeting Monday-Friday for 2 weeks, we work intensively together and with a series of visiting writers and translators. Exercises draw on both the creative wellsprings and the analytical acumen necessary to transform complex works of literary art from one language to another. Topics include the translation of cultural "difference", the translation of metaphor and other figurative language, and translation as a collaborative and co-creative process. Theoretical readings and testimonial accounts by translators tie in directly to practices. Each participant works closely on an individual project with the workshop director and with peers. Before concluding, the group produces an anthology of poems, stories and other genres in the original and in translation. Amanda Powell (University of Oregon), translator and poet, leads the workshop.
The workshop is held on the campus of the Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro. The colonial city of Querétaro, 130 miles northwest of Mexico City, blends pedestrian walkways, 18th century buildings and intimate plazas with Mexico's vibrant modern growth. Querétaro is a UNESCO world heritage site, reknowned for its colonial beauty, as well as an important industrial center for international trade.
